This is what WOULD HAVE BEEN. Lazarus is no longer a CROW film.
Basic Plot:
The supernatural action thriller concerns two friends who become mortal enemies thanks to an ancient Asian curse set in motion after they commit a crime together.
The original plot to Lazarus was this:
CROW IV Continuing the comic-book horror franchise, THE CROW IV will be set in the world of hip-hop music. The story will focus on a rap artist who, at the height of his career, is gunned down in mysterious circumstances. A year later, he returns from the grave through the spirit of the Crow in order to find out who his real killers are and to exact revenge upon them in style. (again, this is what would have been the premise had it been a Crow film)
Characters:
Lazarus - ? (formerly DMX and Eminem were cast)
Director: Tony Bui (formerly Joseph Kahn)
Producer: Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most and Alessandro Camon as executive producer. (formerly FUBU Films)
Screenplay: Tony Bui [formerly Jim Gibson (read review of script here)]
The following updates are what we have compiled on our news section in regard to LAZARUS since its inception back in late 1999, its cancellation in 2001 and rumors about it since its cancellation. The reports are in chronological order, starting at the bottom with the earliest mention of LAZARUS, to the latest information at the top. Go on and page down to the bottom and start reading all the way back up so you are fully informed on what has gone on with LAZARUS. Keep looking back here because this is a living document. Every time we run into another rumor that is not true in regard to Lazarus, we will post it here. And since it is a movie that is still supposed to be done (though not as a Crow film), we will be sure to add those updates here so you know what is going on with it since it does have a Crow history.

Lazarus Alive and Kicking?
Dark Horizons reports that Tony Bui will write and direct the former Crow movie, quite a change from music video director Joseph Kahn. If this report is true, what we've known about Lazarus so far will be completely changed, as a new script is upcoming. What this means for DMX in the title role is unsure. We'll have to wait to find out more, but if you'd like more information on Tony Bui, click here for his Internet Movie Database bio!
Lazarus for WB
Dana Harris' article for Variety 'Bui brings 'Lazarus' to life' shares this interesting information:
"Tony Bui will write and direct "Lazarus" for Warner Bros. Pictures. The supernatural action thriller concerns two friends who become mortal enemies thanks to an ancient Asian curse set in motion after they commit a crime together."
Not exactly the plot, or the company, of the DMX led movie. Now we can safely say that Lazarus is the property of Warner Bros. If you'll cast your mind back, Lazarus was produced for Dimension by Ed Pressman, Jeff Most and FUBU Films, but now Ed Pressman and Jeff Most will also produce Lazarus, with Alessandro Camon as executive producer. The plot of an undead rap artist coming back for vengeance has apparently been scrapped as well in favor of the Asian curse storyline. We can safely say that all we knew about Lazarus before has gone and it's time to start fresh.

DMX Interview
ABaHB received word from a fan that they had heard DMX recently on the show 106 & PARK say he was about to start work on Crow4. Also, there is a quick update on DMX on MTV.com which says he is about to start work on Crow4: Lazarus. Both of these reports are old and are reporting incorrect information. LAZARUS remains a separate project from the still in discussions Crow 4 project. I know the reports on MTV are confusing. As with this latest case, if you have a question, just shoot me an email. As soon as we know what Crow 4 is going to be about, we will be sure to let everyone know. But for sure, we can say, it is NOT going to be LAZARUS.

Lazarus Casting
As we all know, the movie LAZARUS, starring DMX, which was to be a Crow movie is now NOT a Crow movie, but since it does have some Crow-history to it, here is some interesting casting information that came in to the ABaHB box the other day that I thought we would pass on. Farrah Franklin, formerly of Destiny's Child, is set to play DMX's wife in the film. No info on when the film will see the screens, but this is the first piece of news we have heard since it was reported LAZARUS was not going to be a Crow film. Thanks to Josh for the info.

Crow 4 in The Planning Stages
The next installment of The Crow is in the planning stages. There are two storylines that are getting major attention. One of those is a female led story and another is based on one of the Crow novels. It is common place for two or more stories to be in the consideration phase. In the coming months, we will know which one has been chosen. Do not despair if the female led story is not chosen. There is always Crow 5.

MTV and Lazarus
Justin H sends along this little bit of info about the project formerly known as The Crow: Lazarus:
"I was watching MTV earlier today and I saw a news report on DMX. It talked about his new album and video and that he was getting ready to shoot The Crow: Lazarus. I just thought you might find it interesting that they are still referring to it as a Crow movie." But of course, Lazarus is out on its own these days, so let's wait and see what becomes of The Crow 4.

Will The Crow Fly Again?
Third film went straight to video, but there may be a chance for the franchise to continue.
By: Steve Biodrowski
Last year's second CROW sequel, THE CROW: SALVATION wound up going direct-to-video, leaving fans wondering whether the film franchise had run its course. But Edward M. Pressman Productions still considers the property a viable one, thanks to interest generated by the comics, books, and television series. `We're talking about turning one of our CROW novels into a movie, and we're talking to a name director about doing a female Crow,` said a source at the company. `This is a director who could attract name talent, and for some reason he happens to like THE CROW.` happens to like THE CROW.'
Whether this project gets off the ground or not, it seems likely that Rob Zombie's proposed THE CROW: 2087 will not be a future installment in the series, although the plot may be recycled as a stand-alone film separate from the CROW franchise. `We still might do that-just use the script,` said the source. `It would probably work better in animation, because there's a lot of weird stuff in it that would be hard to pull off unless you had a Tim Burton.`

Crow 4
Lazarus or The Crow 4? Insiders say that Lazarus is now it's own entity, so to make up for this and the new direction of The Crow, we've changed the Crow 4 Section around from Lazarus. So, where will The Crow 4 go from here? Will there even be a Crow 4? Time will tell, Crow Fans!

Lazarus DOA
What is sure to make many happy in the Crow community, Lazarus will soon be officially announced as a movie project separate from the Crow franchise (contrary to previous reports, the decision had not been officially made). It remains to be seen how the script of Lazarus will be changed to reflect an independent storyline separate from the Crow movies.
With this news, no other Crow premises have been announced to replace Lazarus. Perhaps it is time, from a movie stand point, for the Crow to rest. The latest movie, "Salvation" is now available for fans to see. Give it some time to be seen by all fans and then start looking towards the next story. I just hope we don't have to wait almost 5 years again for the next movie to be released to the public!

Is Lazarus still a "Crow" project?
Recently, websites like "upcomingmovies.com" and others have posted that Lazarus is all but confirmed to be a non-Crow property. But hold the presses! With reports from Crowrealm that Houston radio is reporting Lazarus is still a Crow property, to a report today from AngelusVosk that Chicago radio is also reporting the same thing, the future of Lazarus as a Crow property is not so dead and buried as some would have you believe. Not to mention, anyone heard from Pressman that Lazarus is not a Crow property?
This is what we know for sure. DMX, Eminem and Joseph Kahn are part of the project. Anything else is speculation by websites.
There are discussions, given the ongoing development of the script and cast, that Lazarus COULD become a franchise outside the Crow projects. Given all the script rewrites and current casting, this is normal discussion. Reporting agencies caught wind of this and prematurely jumped to the net and boldly posted Lazarus was DOA as a Crow project.
In the rush to report this, many aspects were forgotten. To make Lazarus a totally independent project from the Crow movies, it would require a major rewrite of the current script. There are many pieces of the script, if taken out, would leave Lazarus void of any resemblance of a movie. However, if there isn't much taken out of the script, the movie appears to be a rip-off of a Crow movie. So the issue is at hand for Pressman. Do they further delay the project and go with it as a film outside the Crow or do they stick with it and press on? Indications would have us believe Lazarus will fly from the Crow flock. However, until Pressman Films says that, we will have to hang tight for the fat lady to burst into song.
So buckle your seats ladies and gentleman. This should prove to be a funhouse ride we won't soon forget!!

The Crow or Lazarus?
Sugar Rat sends along some news that may put a lot of your worries to rest, read on;
Release Date: TBA 2002 (tentative)
Title Note: When this project was first announced, it was to be the fourth film in The Crow series, but Pressman Films have decided to develop it separately from the series. (3/1/01) With The Crow series apparently on the downswing, it looks like Pressman Films are deciding to develop this film separately, as just Lazarus, and no direct Crow ties.
Distributor: Currently seeking distribution in the USA. (Note: This used to be part of the Crow franchise, which was distributed by Dimension Films, but no deal has been announced with any distributor yet)
And this from Coming Attractions;
March 2, 2001... Variety has reported that $4 million is the tune that indeed drew Eminem to the film, but they're saying that its days as a part of the Crow franchise are over. They refer to the film merely as Lazarus, and it focuses on the story of two young rappers who are killed and return to life, one good (DMX) and one evil (Eminem). Apparently Eminem has indeed turned down the role in Training Day.
So did the franchise get run into the ground? Are we going to have to wait for The Crow: Year One? We'll let you know when we do. [Originally appeared in Variety; sent in by Internet 24-7.]

Variety reports EMINEM offered role in Lazarus
The online industry site Variety, posted the following announcement today:
Rapper Eminem has been offered more than $4 million to join fellow rap artist DMX in "Lazarus," a film that began as the fourth installment of "The Crow" franchise, but which has evolved on its own.
Hollywood has been after Eminem, who won three Grammy awards last week, for some time, and Imagine and Universal are working quickly to get an autobiographical Eminem movie film set up; Eminem would star and Imagine chairman Brian Grazer will produce. Now being scripted by Scott Silver, the Imagine pic covers the young white rapper's struggle to make a name for himself. Eminem is writing songs with his producer Dr. Dre.
Eminem has turned them down other projects, including the chance to play a heavy opposite Denzel Washington in the Warner Bros. drama "Training Day." "Lazarus," which is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, seems an unlikely film to tempt him. The film is being directed by video veteran Joseph Kahn, was written by James Gibson and recently rewritten by Joe Ide. In the new version, two young men die and are brought back from the dead. One is good and the other evil, and they battle for dominance in the hip-hop world. DMX is set to play the good guy, and Eminem has been offered the role of his nemesis. Eminem is managed by Paul Rosenberg and co-managed by Stuart Parr at Shady Goliath and agented for film by UTA. The managers and the rapper were out of the country and the agency wouldn't comment. If the Eminem deal for "Lazarus" comes together, it's unclear when the film would be made, given the busy schedules of both rappers. DMX will be seen this month starring opposite Steven Seagal in "Exit Wounds."

Eminem vs. Lazarus
Here's a rumor sent in from Coming Attractions for you to chew on, this is 100% rumor;
February 20, 2001... So who would play the nemesis of DMX? Well, scoopers seem to think it's rapper Eminem, who was quoted on BBC Radio as saying: ""If you people stop buying my records so that I get a break, then I will do a movie. There is an offer that came across recently that does sound appealing to me. It is an action movie. That is all I can say. I would be the villain. This is the first offer I have got that actually sounded appealing to me."
Keep in mind this is unconfirmed and speculative, people. You know what to do with salt.

As we reported, IGN was able to get ahold of a copy of the upcoming Crow film "The Crow: Lazarus". Their review was less than glowing. IGN Crow 4 Report
Here's the full script review of Lazarus from IGN!

Lazarus Script Details
This comes from Comics 2 Film, so brace youselves, Crow Fans, and read on;
Most fans have yet to see last year's Crow movie, The Crow: Salvation. In spite of this, Pressman Films is pressing forward with a forth installment for the franchise. IGN FilmForce got their hands on a copy of the script for the new movie, which is called The Crow: Lazarus (or possibly Lazarus: A Tale of the Crow).
IGN reports that casting is underway on the new movie, which has long had actor/rapper DMX (Exit Wounds) attached for the lead role. Music video director Joseph Kahn is said to be attached as director of the sequel.
As has been widely reported, the script tells the story of Lazarus, a red-hot rap star who gets gunned down (along with his pregnant girlfriend and record-mogul friend) in a drive-by shooting. Lazarus, of course, returns from the grave as the latest incarnation of The Crow.
The IGN reviewer characterizes the screenplay as being formulaic, and presenting viewers with a rehash of what's been seen in the previous films and in the Stairway to Heaven TV series. The movie does give Lazarus an anti-crow nemesis, borrowing for the TV show mythology. It also features the return of Detective Albrecht, who was played by Ernie Hudson in the first Crow movie. The reviewer also takes exception with the script's unrealistic portrayal of the world of rap music.

Press Release
Video director Joseph Kahn has been tapped to direct rapper-actor DMX in the upcoming "The Crow: Lazarus" film, the fourth flick in the "Crow" franchise, which is expected to begin filming in spring 2001.
Aside from the presence of DMX in the starring role, the newest "Crow" flick should be distinctly more hip-hop in feel - and fashion - than its predecessors, as FUBU Films, an entertainment arm of the FUBU urban attire empire, will co-produce the movie along with the Edward Pressman Film Corp.
"The Crow: Lazarus" will be Kahn's debut feature film, but his name is quite familiar to music video aficionados. Over the last 10 years Kahn has directed clips for artists such as the Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Korn, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Brandy & Monica, Mase, Monster Magnet, Foxy Brown, Mobb Deep, Geto Boys, Willie Nelson, and Onyx, among others.
Kahn's work on Sisqo's "Thong Song" helped earn a 2000 MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. The director's recent projects include Moby's "South Side" clip featuring Gwen Stefani as well as Britney Spears' "Stronger" and the Wu-Tang Clan's "Gravel Pit" and "Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" videos.
Producers are hoping that the result of DMX and Joseph Kahn's cinematic collaboration will be something audiences are willing to see on the big screen, unlike the third film in the series, "The Crow: Salvation," which will receive a straight-to-video release on March 20, 2001. The soundtrack to the third "Crow" flick, which included tracks from Kid Rock, Hole, Tricky and Filter, was released earlier this year.
In a recent interview with MTV News, DMX, who will play a slain rapper who rises from the dead in "Lazarus," indicated that the look of the "Crow" films was in need of reinterpretation.
"It's going to look different from the other 'Crow' [films]," he said of "Lazarus." "I've seen [the other films]; I did a little research and looked at them. The sets, I really wasn't too keen on, because [they were visually] dead and real bland, with a lot of dark colors. It looked like 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' in the ghetto.
"It didn't look real," DMX continued. "There were no extras at all. You saw no regular people [in the background], no traffic, nothing. It was like, 'What is this?'"
DMX will be seen next alongside Steven Seagal in "Exit Wounds," which is due out on March 16, 2001, right around the time the rapper-actor is expected to start production on " Lazarus."
In addition to the film projects, DMX plans to start work on his fourth studio album early next year, and Def Jam has set a tentative release date of May 22 for the project. The follow-up to 1999's multi-platinum And Then There Was X is still untitled, but in a recent interview with MTV News, DMX said he planned to call the album The Ear.

Reports
Music video director Joseph Kahn has been selected to direct the fourth Crow feature film, The Crow: Lazarus, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The film, which has a script by James Gibson, will tell the story of rap artist (played by DMX) who is killed in a drive-by shooting by a biker gang. Of course, he rises out of the grave to exact his revenge.
The film, which currently has no distributor, is scheduled to start shooting in the spring.

Reuters Press
NEW YORK -- Music video helmer Joseph Kahn has been tapped to direct "The Crow: Lazarus," the fourth installment of Edward R. Pressman Film Corps.' "Crow" franchise. "Lazarus" is the James Gibson-penned supernatural drama starring rapper-actor DMX as a hard-living rap artist killed in a drive-by shooting who comes back from the grave to seek revenge on the biker gang responsible for his murder. While the three previous installments of "The Crow" franchise have been rolled out under the Dimension Films banner, it is not yet clear if Dimension will be involved in the "Lazarus" release, a Dimension spokesperson said. "Lazarus" does not yet have a distributor.

Official
Kahn is officially announced as director of The Crow: Lazarus in today's The Hollywood Reporter. What's interesting to note is that Dimension Films, the company that has released all three previous Crow movies, hasn't officially decided to distribute Lazarus just yet. Perhaps this is more cold feet from Dimension, after the company decided to release The Crow: Salvation to just one movie theater and not give the film a wider run. Lazarus Gets Director
Corona Coming Attractions reported it a few weeks ago. Today The Hollywood Reporter confirms that music video director Joseph Kahn has been hired to direct The Crow: Lazarus. This report indicates that Dimension Films may not be distributing this sequel. Dimension's decision not to give the recent The Crow: Salvation a theatrical run led to some heated public remarks by the producers of the franchise.
Rapper/actor DMX is expected to star as the title character, a rapper killed in a drive-by and resurrected for revenge. James Gibson has written the script.

Two anonymous scoopers tell us the helmer for this project: "The new Director is Joseph Kahn. Joseph is known in the music scene as one of the top five music video directors. He's done videos for the Backstreet Boys, Sisqo, Janet Jackson and most recently Britney Spears. Joseph's been directing in some form or another since he was sixteen in high school making short films on VHS." [Two Anonymous people in clown white. Wild.]

The Crow Flies Again
THE CROW FLIES AGAIN: Though the Kirsten Dunst/Eric Mabius-starrer "The Crow: Salvation" is heading directly to video, producer Ed Pressman's company insists plans are still a go to mount "The Crow: Lazarus." Rapper DMX remains attached to star in the fourth big-screen installment of the saga of the Crow -- a character killed prematurely who returns with supernatural powers to seek vengeance.
"Lazarus" was expected to begin production by the end of this year, but we're told there is no start date, and no additional casting has yet been set. The latest storyline has DMX playing a hard-living rap artist who leaves the music scene for a woman, is soon killed in a drive-by shooting and comes back from the grave to seek revenge on the biker gang responsible for his murder.
The original "The Crow" -- the film on which the late Brandon Lee was working when he was accidentally shot -- and its follow-up, "The Crow: City of Angels," with Vincent Perez, reportedly grossed about $70 million combined. However, "The Crow: Salvation" sat on a shelf for a year, until Miramax gave it a one-week trial run in September in Spokane, WA., (where the first two movies fared well) to see if it would fly as a theatrical release.
Unfortunately, it never got off the ground. Pressman's company is said to have signed DMX, who made his acting debut in the 1998 "Belly" film, to a multipicture deal specifically for the "Crow" films in the hopes of breathing new life into the franchise.

Cast in Sight?
In their Hollywood Exclusive column, Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith provide a Crow: Lazarus update. The columnists spoke to a representative at Pressman Films about the status of the project, in the wake of The Crow: Salvation going straight to video.
The columnists report that Lazarus has no cast beyond the headliner DMX. No start date has been set for production. In spite of this, Pressman Films insist Lazarus is "still a go." The movie is said to be part of a multi-picture deal between Pressman and DMX, specifically centered on the Crow franchise.

Revelations vs. Lazarus
Rapper DMX, aka Earl Simmons, has it going on all cylinders. In addition to signing on with Def Jam for his own label, Bloodline, and penning an autobiography due next year, the rapper is set to star in the fourth installment of the supernatural The Crow film series.
According to the rapper's label, Def Jam, The Crow: Revelations is the story of Lazarus, a hard-living rap artist (DMX) who quits the music scene to get married, only to be killed with his fiancee in a drive-by shooting. Once he rises up from six feet under, he goes after the biker gang he thinks is responsible. Rumors of the rap star's "sightings" rumble around town. The true identity of the murderer is revealed in the shocking ending."
This will be the rap artist's third time in front of a movie camera. He appeared in Romeo Must Die with Aaliyah and Jet Li, and starred in Belly with Nas, Method Man, and T-Boz. He will also be seen in the upcoming Exit Wounds with Steven Seagal. Revelations will hit theaters in 2001. -- Janine Coveney, Los Angeles

Lazarus
Mr. E returns and he brings tidings of information. Apparently the change of title, bringing more focus to the Lazarus character, is DMX's idea. He tells us, "It seems that DMX is in love with the idea of making a franchise out of his Crow character, and wants the guys at Pressman hype the character more." He then mentions the recent rumors regarding Hype Williams wanting to be in the chair...
"Although nothing has been signed, it looks as though Hype Williams does indeed want to direct Crow 4. While he is fairly happy with the script, he does want some changes made, so he has spoken with scribe Jim Gibson about making some changes. One thing is certain: With Hype and DMX onboard, the film should at least have one of the most tremendous soundtracks in a long time, if you enjoy Hip Hop."
The Crow: Lazarus is underway with the announcement that rapper/actor DMX has been signed to star, and filming scheduled to begin before the end of the year. Dimension is looking to invigorate the franchise and reportedly DMX has been signed for further sequels in the Crow series. "We are thrilled that DMX will be taking on the role of Lazarus," said Edward Pressman. "His presence on screen is truly magnetic, and he is sure to broaden and deepen the audience for the franchise." "I am very excited about my involvement in The Crow: Lazarus," DMX said. "I like the story line and I can identify with the character." Lazarus, written by James Gibson, is about a hard-living rap artist who leaves the music scene for a woman. Soon after, he is killed in a drive-by shooting. He comes back from the grave to seek revenge on the biker gang responsible for his murder.

Hip-Hop Crow
What we've heard before about Crow 4 being a film grounded in hip-hop music is right on the money. The story centers around a rap artist named Lazarus who gets gunned down along with his girlfriend--much like real-life shootings of such artists as The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac. Currently slated to play Lazarus? Rapper DMX. Who's going to sit in the chair? Nothing decided on yet, although RZA of The Wu-Tang Clan has been talked about, as has video director Martin Weisz. Mr. E tells us as well that the title of the film will be The Crow: Revelations...and that Jim Gibson will be scribing.

A New Film
As Paula Guran reports in the tasty DarkEcho newsletter, along with word about the third installment in the franchise, talk is already out about a fourth film. "If there is a fourth The Crow movie, it may be loosely based on the death of a gangsta rapper (shades of Tupac Shakur) and would feature a 'HipHop' Crow..."
Other word about future franchises over at Comics2Film said that not only would they be able to show a Crow in almost any time period, but that O'Barr himself would screenwriter this project. Whether any of this has changed as a result of recent revealings remains to be seen, and let's not forget one thing--if the third Crow tanks at the box office, then it may not be able to bring itself back from the dead.
