Third 'Crow' feature flies to video

The third installment of the "The Crow" trilogy, "The Crow: Salvation," will be resurrected Jan. 23 as a direct-to-video release by Dimension Films. The Kirsten Dunst starrer had been scheduled for theatrical release this month, but a moderate turnout at test screenings prompted the direct-to-video strategy, an industry source said. The original "Crow" film generated more than $50 million at the boxoffice in 1994, sparking a cult following that continues to spawn rentals of the original film and its sequel, "The Crow: City of Angels." "Salvation" is expected to be rental-priced on VHS and sell-through-priced for day-and-date release on DVD.

The Crow: Salvation' Flies Straight To Video
Wednesday, October 18, 2000 12:34 CDT The third installment of the "The Crow" trilogy, "The Crow: Salvation," will be resurrected Jan. 23 as a direct-to-video release by Dimension Films, says The Hollywood Reporter. "Salvation" is expected to be rental-priced on VHS and sell-through-priced for day-and-date release on DVD.

Something To Crow About - USA Today article from 9/29/00

Did Miramax set up The Crow: Salvation to fall? The producers of the film, starring Kirsten Dunst and Eric Mabius, say yes. As part of the distribution deal, Miramax promised to give the action film some sort of theatrical release. So Salvation, the third film in The Crow franchise, opened for a week in one theater and bombed.

Miramax says the film got a decent shot, but Salvation producer Ed Pressman begs to differ. "There was no television or radio backing," he says. "All we got was the smallest newspaper ad." Miramax exec Mark Gill says the studio picked up Salvation mainly for its value on video and cable. As for the advertising, he says: "They got the standard-size ad for that market. "

Pressman says Miramax's move makes little sense because Salvation star Dunst is coming off the $56-million-grossing Bring It On.

He has a theory as to why his R-rated movie didn't get a bigger opening: fear created by the Federal Trade Commission's report on marketing violence to children. "The Crow could be the first film to be a victim of this new climate."

Says Gill: "There is utterly no basis for that. This decision was made nine months ago." At Christmas, he points out, the studio will have Dracula 2000, an R-rated movie with a similar theme. Pressman and fellow Crow producer Jeff Most aren't deterred. Rapper DMX is set for the fourth Crow, to start shooting early next year.

ABaHB Commentary

I think Crow fans have even more fuel to add to our boycott fire of Miramax. Take a look at the last paragraph of the above article. Miramax says their decision to send Salvation to video/cable was made nine months ago, January 2000. My question is; why were the Crow fans and Pressman not made aware of this? Is it not deceptive to allow Pressman and fans to believe their movie will see a CREDIBLE theatrical release, make a decision contrary to this, then wait nine months to make that decision known? This brings into serious doubt their claims that Salvation was not sent to Spokane to fail. Why send a film to a theater for a test release when the decision to go direct video/cable has already been made? I will tell you why. They agreed to "some sort of theatrical release". In order to satisfy this agreement they sent the movie to a remote area of the country, with no viable promotional package to back it. Their claims of Salvation getting the "standard sized promotion for its market" is both patronizing and insulting to our intelligence. The mock screening that Miramax put on is the final insult in a long line of contradictions and deception. Salvation proved that it could attract an audience by the fan response that it received at Dragon-Con and Comic-Con. Pressman put time and effort into promoting the screenings during these events. This was evident by the turn out of fans to see the movie.

At this point, we just want to be allowed to see our movie. It is time for the deceptions to end. We are not a fan base to be insulted and patronized. Our boycott will continue and will now be stronger than ever. I can only hope that Pressman has a new distributor for future Crow movies. A distributor, who will stand behind the movies and not treat the Crow fans and persons who create the films like second class citizens.

USA Today Report

Here's a negative report from USA Today:

Miramax seeks film salvation

By Josh Chetwynd and Andy Seiler, USA TODAY

Call it Miramax's tryout program. The company, one of Hollywood's most prolific, produces more movies than it can release, leaving many of them headed directly to video or cable. But a few of those films with questionable commercial potential are getting a chance to prove themselves in one-week, one-theater runs. The strategy: If they show any box office power, they'll get a real release.

The Crow: Salvation — the third movie in The Crow franchise, with Kirsten Dunst (Bring It On) and Eric Mabius (Cruel Intentions) — came out Sept. 15 in a Spokane, Wash., theater. The city was chosen, in part, because the first two movies in the series did well there. But the action picture was dead on arrival, grossing a minuscule $1,019 in its first weekend. (The first two films grossed about $70 million combined.) Now Miramax is eyeing a cable premiere.

The studio plans to continue the program, even though Cinderella success has proved elusive. Not one of the one-week wonders has been popular enough to earn a larger release.

CROW SALVATION SET FOR DVD COLLECTIONS

A rumored release date of September 1 for The Crow: Salvation has been making the rounds on the internet. However Jeff Most, producer of the movie, told fans at the Comic-Con International today that the movie does not have a release date. "We're hoping some time this fall, it'll be in theaters. Hopefully we'll know pretty soon," Most told attendees of the Crow panel.

Most also said that Salvation will definitely enjoy a release on DVD in the first quarter of 2001. It'll be part of a boxed set which also includes the original movie starring Brandon Lee and the sequel The Crow: City of Angels. The collection will be packed with extras including original scripts, concept designs, storyboards and artwork. "It'll be a very complete and exciting package," Most said.

Eric Mabius, who stars as the latest incarnation of The Crow was also on hand to answer questions. Many of the fans attending the panel had seen a screening of the movie the night before. Mabius commented on his characters who, at times, is more light-hearted than his predecessors. "When I read the script I thought about if any one of us were in similar circumstances, what we would do with those powers. I really wanted to explore the glee and the childish aspects of those things as opposed to dying and expecting those powers to come into one's capabilities.

Mabius trained for six weeks with trainer Dave Lea who's worked on movies such as Batman, Judge Dredd and Kiss The Girls. "I worked about as much as I could for those six weeks. It was a humbling experience," Mabius told fans. Lea has a small part as a doorman in the movie.

Mabius also talked about drawing motivation from James O'Barr's original comics. "I had read The Crow when I was a kid and was really moved by it. The thing that I didn't realize at the time but I did when I started looking into what was done in the other films, what James had really set into motion...I marvel at James taking his personal tragedy and turning it into what has been a catharsis for millions of people. What I always come back to is that this is James' tragedy and there's nothing false about that.

Most was asked about rumors that the next Crow movie would feature a hip hop take on the concept or even a female lead. The producer would only say that they are planning a Crow 4 and announcements would be forthcoming. "Anything we're doing with The Crow, we want it to be thought out. We wantit to be presented in the best fashion possible and we want it to be a unique, compelling story."

Most also told fans that the TV version of the character is set to return on the Sci Fi Channel on July 23rd at 8pm. The entire first season of The Crow: Stairway To Heaven is slated to be aired. Most told fans that if the numbers are good, there is interest in going back into production on new episodes. If new installments were produced Mark Decascos would return as the star of that show.

Salvation Flies Higher During Second Screening at DragonCon 2000
The second screening for 'The Crow: Salvation' , was a major success. Unlike the night before, the theater was packed, with a good number of people having to stand during the entire film. Confusion over the theater's location kept the attendance down the night before. The packed house cheered and hollered all during the screening, giving their approval of the newest Crow movie. As with the night before, Jeff Conner started the evening off with an introduction, which included bringing Eric Mabius up to the stage to say a few words. Fans gave him a very warm reception and an even louder one when he finished. James O'Barr was in the house as well and of course, received a rousing applause from the audience. As for the movie, the crowd again lauded Eric's performance, as it had done the night before. The negative reaction for Dunst from the previous night was replaced by mostly catcalls by a large portion of the young male audience. There were a couple of fans heard commenting before going into the screening that they had heard negative comments about the movie and did not expect it to be much. Those same fans were heard exiting the theater commenting how Salvation surpassed their expectations.

Overall, fans at both screenings seem to agree; though Salvation will not replace the first movie as their favorite Crow movie, it has put The Crow back on the right track.

Salvation Review

Hey^_^ Here is my Salvation review! I'll get back to you with more info soon! Oh, and Jeff Conner said that The Crow Salvation WILL NOT be direct to video. He said it will be released THEATRICALLY this fall. :-) So hopefully that will silence all of the straight to video rumors.

I just got back from Dragon Con yesterday, and I saw The Crow: Salvation twice. Once on Friday and once on Saturday. Friday was the best day because it was packed and the audience was really into it. They cheered at the action scenes and laughed at the funny parts, and it was applauded at the end. Now, the film isn't perfect or anything. It does have some bad points, but it also has some REALLY great ones too. Also keep in mind that this screen was only about half the size of a regular theater screen and it still got a great response. Saturday night there weren't as many people because the costume contest started an hour late, and that is the event everyone goes to at Dragon Con. But the audience was filled out with people from the college. The film was also well recieved that night by the college kids and the Crow fans alike.

Eric Mabius and Jeff Conner were there both nights to introduce the film. I also met them both and talked to them for a while on Saturday and I have to tell you I was very impressed with Eric. He is a very intense person. Kind of quiet and soft spoken and almost a little shy. :-) But he was really really nice. They gave all the fans an exclusive poster only for those who went to the test screening. They also gave out free promo photos and books.(they had 3 different ones to choose from.) So I picked up 'Quoth the Crow.' I also got Jeff Conner, James O'Barr and Eric Mabius's autograph a few times. Now on to my review of the film itself......

First let me just answer the question that I'm sure everyone wants to know most......it is WAY better than City of Angels. :-) That is what everyone agreed on after seeing the movie. Unlike City of Angels, this one does not try to recreate the first movies magic. This film is completely detached from the first two films and that allows it to create its own magic. ^_^

THE SCORE: The score by Marco Belltrami was much better than I thought it would be, but most of the people I talked to wished that the original Crow theme was in the movie somewhere. We asked Jeff Conner about this and he said the reason it isn't there is because they really wanted to seperate this film from the others and that is understandable.

THE SOUNDTRACK: Before I saw the movie, I liked a few songs on the soundtrack, and that was it. But after seeing the music with the film it really changed my perspective on the soundtrack. All of the songs fit in very well with the scenes in the movie.

THE ACTING: Eric Mabius was great! He is great in all of his films and this one was no different. One thing about him is that he has very intense expressive eyes and I think that is important for The Crow since you can't really as much on your facial expressions.

Fred Ward: Was pretty good but his part wasn't that large so there isn't a lot to judge by.

Kirsten Dunst: This one is a really mixed bag. Some scenes she is really good in, some she is not. I don't think its her fault either. I don't think her charector was fleshed out enough in the script.

Jodi Lynn O'Keefe: She has a small role, but she is very good and definatly makes you believe that she loved Alex a lot.

OVERALL: I LOVED it! I had to have since I saw it two nights in a row. :-) It didn't surpass the first film, but it didn't set out to do that either. Stylistically this film and the first one are pretty different but I think that is what this movie needed. Also since I saw it twice I can tell if its one of those movies that gets better each time you see it, and I think I actually did like it the second time a little bit better.^_^ I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I am sure most people here will too!

Salvation Flies Higher During Second Screening at DragonCon 2000

DragonCon Update

Here it is folks! Last night, CrowFinder attended the first screening of Salvation during DragonCon 2000 and has submitted her reaction to the film. The audience reaction was very positive. Emotions were very high; going from cheering certain scenes, to being riveted to their seats the next. Scenes that were meant to be light, were met with appropriate laughter. The only negative response was to Kirsten Dunst. The audience snickered during some of her more emotional scenes. Overall, judging by this audience, The Crow: Salvation, should kick-start the new millennium for The Crow. Read CrowFinder's report below from opening night at DragonCon 2000, enjoy. Take care.....LLcruize
