Adaptation of James Obarr's: The Crow

Inertia: Re-Making The Crow

Film Premise
"Intertia: Re-Making The Crow" is a documentry that follows David Ullman and Matt Jackson's making of "James O'Barr's The Crow." The documentry is a personal look at the creation of the film, from inception through the creative process. Intertia was screened at the NY Film Festival, more of which can be read in David Ullman's article 'Bright Lights, Big Screen.'

Personal Thoughts
The first thing evident when viewing the "Inertia" documentary is that David Ullman is a very serious young man (at the time 14) and Matt Jackson is a complete nut! This is not to say Matt was not as serious about the project, but all through the production, his antics help to keep David and the others from taking the project and themselves, too seriously. A must for a project that ended up taking years to complete.

We are taken behind the scenes, from inception, to house cleaning (Ullman's basement and attic were cleaned out to become the main sets for the movie). We see planning sessions, staking out locations and site preparation. For a film that clocks in just under an hour, the amount of work put in by David and Matt is awe-inspiring.

As "making of" pieces go, this one is a little more personal than the usual fare we get from Hollywood. All of the emotions, both positive and negative, are captured. We see the fun that was had by all, but we also see the frustration and exhaustion. David and Matt put all they had into the project and "Inertia" highlights that dedication.

"Inertia" proves that with the right amount of heart, initiative and talent, two young men can set out on an ambition quest and be successful. The success here is not the amount of videos sold, box office records or critical/fan acceptance. No, the success documented by "Inertia" is in seeing a dream completed.

We wish continued success to David and Matt in their future endeavors. If their film, and their work on the film, is any indication of what is to be, we will be seeing these two young men again, on a larger stage.
