Ullman talks about The Crow

Our good friend Deaderman recently spoke with David Ullman. Those new to the Crow world, David created an amateur film which was a more literal interpretation of the comic than what the feature film was. He had to stop offering the film due to distribution legal matters. There may be hope though, for fans that have not seen his film. Check out this interview from Deaderman and see what we mean.

Take care......amf

Aus DVD date, but...

Syrecius points out that on the Dark Horizons site, June 13th is indicated as the release date for the Region 4 City of Angels DVD, unfortunately, this isn't for the boxed set. Still no word is out on all the other regions for the boxed set, but we'll keep you posted!

Up to Date

While we're awaiting for some important news to come in, we thought it'd be time just to go through some updates around the site. One important one that new Crow Fans should take note of is the change around with the Crow 4 page, formerly 'Lazarus.' Because the film is now out of the DMX spotlight, we've updated accordingly, but you can still grab the history of Lazarus here, just like we'll always have the 2037 page in Salvation. Also, the Crow Reflections page will be getting some updates in the near future with more pics and items for you to enjoy. So, if you've got the time, check 'em out!

JAMES O'BARR'S SAVAGES

Peregrine Entertainment will be releasing James O'Barr: Savages, a 32-page one-shot, in August.

Peregrine's David Napoliello told The Continuum that the book, which was originally intended as a portfolio from the now-defunct Kitchen Sink Press, will contain a collection of fantasy illustrations from O'Barr, the creator of The Crow.

"In addition, there's commentary from O'Barr and advice to aspiring artists," Napoliello said.

James O'Barr: Savages will feature a painted cover by O'Barr and will cost $2.95.

VHS in Australia + DVD

The title says it all. Leading into an international release, Salvation will be getting released to VHS in Australia (with distributors claiming around two weeks) for hire. The good news with this is that ex-rental copies can be bought for relatively cheap prices and everyone can take the film in.

On the matter of a VHS boxed set, that looks a little more ominous. Only those with Region 1 (North America) can enjoy the DVD, while international customers have to wait. If you're a true Crow Fan and just can't wait, the only thing you can do is get a region-free DVD player and order it through Amazon.com, although some outlets in other countries do stock Region 1 DVDs because of their better quality. We'll keep you updated on any news as it comes in!

Mabius Update

Our good friend cOrvus sends along an update on Salvation's Eric Mabius:

"I was looking through the June issue of the Official U.S. Playstation Magazine (OPM) and found mention of Eric Mabius being cast in the new Resident Evil movie. On page 27 there is a picture of Milla Jovovich holding a futuristic assault rifle in one hand and a pistol in the other. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner but here's what the caption read. "Now that shooting has begun on Constantin Films' Resident Evil movie, the studio has finally released this single shot to the press. The teaser picture above features the beautiful star, Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, The Messenger), in her role as a character named Alice. So far, the only other character announced is Rain, whom Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight) will portray. The Oct. 26 release also stars Eric Mabius (The Crow: Salvation), as well as several other actors whom we're sure you've never heard of and probably don't even care about." "

Ephemeral Terror 'The Crow - A Love Story'

James O'Barr - The Crow "Lost Pages" Part 2

The most important of these scenes in the lost pages is a flashback where Shelly is attempting to teach Eric to dance. He just can't seem to get the hang of it, and he's stumbling around, falling. It's a cute and romantic scene, while at the same time there's still tat sense of foreboding. I really liked these pages, but there weren't essential to the storyline. Since the scene wasn't necessary to keep the story moving, I had to pull these pages out.

The second important scene that I removed involved Eric confronting the criminals. The pencil sketch reproduced in these pages* shows Eric going up the stairs. There's a band of gangsters hanging out at Fun Boy's apartment, waiting to see if Eric is going to come back. In this scene, Eric is reciting some poetry as he goes up the stairs.

The last major "Lost" page is from right before the car chase at the end. Eric's car has been broken down for a year and he's at a junkyard getting parts to fix it. In the full-page pencil reproduction here**, he's conversing with a character at the junkyard; he's like a Danny DeVito character.

These are the three major scenes. Also reproduced here are half of a "lost page"* showing Eric seated in a stairwell, Eric on a beach (a drawing done for the Amazing Heroes "swimsuit issue"), and a series of drawings that were done for advertisements for the comic books. Unfortunately, Caliber never ran any ads for The Crow, and these sketches have also remained unpublished until now.

J. O'Barr

* We'll have the pages up as soon as I can get access to a scanner!

Shape of Things to Come

We may be having a mid-weekend update, so stay tuned!

Ephemeral Terror 'The Crow - A Love Story'

James O'Barr - The Crow "Lost Pages" Part 1

When The Crow comic book series was originally published by Caliber, not all the pages that I had scripted and begun drawing could be included in the comics. There were reasons why these pages were missing, and why they're going to be restored to the graphic novel now. I'm putting them back because they were meant to be there from the beginning, and I thought a lot of people would like to see what some of the mysteries were in these lost pages.

Caliber was a new company, and they were under the impression that the pages count for comic books could be almost any number. They thought that as long as it was an even number, it would be no problem. They didn't realize the page count for a comic book had to be a multiple of twelve: twenty-four pages, thirty-six pages, whatever the story called for.

Thus some of the pages had to be removed before the comics could be published. I had planned to remove the ones that would be least important to the story. When it came down to it, it actually was hard to go back and pull so many pages from the work I had created. I ended up selecting pages where I wouldn't have to do a great deal of rewriting, pages that could be removed but still not leave to many gaps in the story.

Part 2 tomorrow!

LINSNER, O'BARR TEAM UP ON COVER

view art here

The first collaboration between Joseph Michael Linsner, creator of Dawn, and James O'Barr, creator of The Crow, is featured in Peregrine Entertainment's third annual issue of Independent Voices.

Linsner and O'Barr created the wrap-around cover for the charity book, which will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"We're very pleased that Joe and James have given us the chance to bring this unique piece of artwork to the fans," said Peregrine Publisher David Napoliello, "and we couldn't ask for a more worthy cause than Make-a-Wish."

Independent Voices #3 also contains stories from the creators of Elfquest (Richard Pini), Astounding Space Thrills (Steve Conley), Boondoggle (Steve Stegelin), and Peregrine's Books of Lore. Other featured artists include Carla Speed-McNeil (Finder from Lightspeed Press), Jason Alexander (Empty Zone from Sirius Entertainment), and Vince Sneed and John Peters (Forty Winks from Peregrine Entertainment).

Peregrine also auctioned the original Linsner/O'Barr cover painting for IV#3 at the Pittsburgh Comicon's Make-A-Wish Foundation auction on April 28 -- more than two months before the actual comic ships to stores. In total, the auction and other events at the Comicon raised over $35,000 for Make-A-Wish.

Independent Voices #3 will be a 48-page, black-and-white comic. It ships in July and will cost $2.95.

Market Watch

John Carvalho sends along some news that Salvation has flown onto VHS at the low price of 15.95! This is a great oppertunity to get the video if you haven't yet got a DVD, so remember, the more fan interest, the better we are for seeing a new Crow project.

Crow lunchboxes and thermoses have been popping up on the market, Justin H sends along this report;

"There is a new Crow lunchbox that has shown up on Ebay this week. It features several pictures of Brandon Lee and comes with a thermos. It looks like it is made by the same company that did the Marilyn Manson and Kiss lunchboxes last year, but I'm not absolutely sure about that. If it is the same company, then retail stores like Spencer's should eventually sell it. To see a picture of it, check out the current auctions on ebay. "

For Australian fans of Stairway to Heaven, you can catch the show at 4am on Sunday mornings on Fox 8, so you'll need Foxtel to watch the program. At the end of the week

We're off got another weekend of behind the scenes work, Crow Fans, but don't despair, you can still get in contact with us or have a look around the site for some of the updates we have in store!

2037 Review

Long time friend and contributor to ABaHB, Joshua Bunkofske, has sent in a review of the Crow: 2037 script. See what he has to say about the much discussed script that almost became a Crow movie:

Just wanted to pass along my review of the script for The Crow: 2037. It was an interesting read to say the least, but I can understand now why the producers felt they could make the film without it being a part of The Crow series.

The script starts out pretty good, with a nice shadowy image of christ on the cross and a crow landing on his shoulder, that was pretty much the coolest thing in the script. It was well-written, but too far away from what The Crow is, and in all honesty, the only thing connecting 2037 to The Crow is the bird, which really isn't around much and Crow-vision.

Zombie can definately write a cool script, though. The imagery and story were excellent, albeit somewhat gory, and I could definately hear Rob Zombie's music playing while reading the script.

The story, as everyone knows, is about a young boy and his mother who are killed on halloween night in the year 2010 by a satanic priest. One year later the boy returns from the grave with no knowledge of what happened to him. Twenty seven years later, BASIL, the boy is grown up and is now a bounty hunter tracking down various criminals. But this future is anything BUT futuristic, it's more like the old west meets the Salem Witch Trials, it was different as I was expecting a dark Blade Runner type future.

To put it in a nutshell, The Crow: 2037 would make a cool crow movie IF there was more crow action in it. Basil, the crow, never uses his crow powers, save for Crow-vision a few times here and there.

All in all, the script was a good read, somewhat screwed up, but it was enjoyable and humorous in some spots. I'd give it 7 out of ten crows.

Sincerely,

Joshua L. Bunkofske

This Day in May

What is coming up this month, you may ask? Well, it looks a little dry in the way of Crow merchandise, but we'll be double checking all lists very soon just to make sure, but what is a real disappointment to Crow Fans world wide is the absence of O'Barr's new Crow tale and the author's edition of The Crow. We'll keep you updated on anything that comes in!
