Questions Answered: Darkest Days
To answer questions, and end all the contraversy involving the upcoming independent film, "The Crow: Darkest Days" production of the movie has been made very clear.
Chris Freytag will play the newest dead avenger in the Crow mythos in a film created by he and a band of Crow fans. While its not something that will hit major theatres across America or the world, it will be in association with Public Access (a channel in Oregon) and released into Eugene, Oregon's "Bijou Theatre" downtown. While its a regular film at the movies, it will make no profits. Simpley a free screening at the theatre, and will more than likely play on Public Access. Which in the Eugene area is channel 97. However, for a small price most likely, Crow fans around the world who wish to see the extrodinary work is invited to by contacting us and ordering a copy on Video through the Darkest Days website or ABaHB.
The rights to the Crow are not in anyway being violated. Its a film inspired by James O' Barr's masterpiece, yet the characters and events are original. Most of the cast, especially Freytag, are also huge fans of Professional wrestling. Freytag brought it to everyone's attention that WCW (World Championship Wrestling) star "Sting" is using the Crow as his gimmack now. O' Barr was asked about it, and he said that he felt that immitation was the greatest form of flattery. He loved seeing his work being used in different walks off life, and being built on. Expanded. Freytag takes it to heart when making this film.
Miramax/Dimension films dosen't know about the film, but could sooner or later. For now its being released and distrubuted through Public Access.
The budget on the film is still unknown and will remain that way until later this year when the film begins shooting.
Coming soon is a Pre-Production interview with main player Chris Freytag. Giving his insight on the entire world of the Crow, Darkest Days, and Brandon Lee.

Salvation Interview!
BIG thanks go out to BCampo for typing up this interview! It will be in the Interviews/Salvation section of ABaHB, so for further reading, it'll be there!
Salvation
by Jeff Conner/ transcription/typos/fuck ups by BCampo
"How about this?" he's saying to the director. "I take his gun away," he disarms the attacker in a blur of hand moves, "Bring him down like this," the thug is now on his knees, "Say half the line, then bring him up like this and finish." The director agrees. After one more rehearsal they start filming the scene, two cameras rolling. Three takes later they're done. "Cut. Perfect. Check the gate." says that director from behind the camera monitors.
It's the second day of production on The Crow: Salvation, my first day on the set, having just arrived in Salt Lake City from Los Angeles and hour ago. I've yet to meet the film's star, Eric Mabius, and while his bio says that he was on a nationally ranked luge team during high school (where he began to study acting) after witnessing his off-the-cuff fight choreography, I figure that they left off the part about the kung-fu lessons. I guess his PR people didn't want to confuse the issue, since Eric has already been tagged by critics as a young actor to watch. Having cut his teeth in the world in independent cinema with credits like Welcome to the Dollhouse and I shot Andy Warhol (his first two films) to this years Lawn Dogs and Black Circle Boys (both new tape releases). Eric's biggest mainstream exposure to date is the recent mean-teen hit, Cruel Intentions.
Later, I use the two "making of" books I hacked out about the Crow films as calling cards to introduce myself to Eric. Despite this obvious gambit the young actor graciously invites me for a chat in his trailer between scenes. First off, he's a long time fan of The Crow, in fact it was the first film he ever auditioned for (one of the bad guy roles). This coincidence lends a bit of cosmic correctness to his current portrayal of the latest dark angel from the Crow mythos.
Eric is also well versed in the Crow comics by James O'barr, having checked them out back in 1993 when he first auditioned (the series was still incomplete at that time), and later after the film came out and the Tundra editions were collected as a graphic novel. (His manager gave him rare first printings of the Caliber editions when he signed on as the new Crow) On his desk is a copy of Shattered Lives & Broken Dreams, the anthology of new Crow short stories from Del Rey Books (co-edited by O'barr) which he's been reading avidly. He remarks that A.A. Attanasio's Afterward is a virtual manifesto for new Crow sagas (Attanasio, who also contributed a story for the collection and did the introduction for O'barr's graphic novel, is currently writing the novel The Crow: Heaven and Hell, which HarperPrism will publish next year.)
When I finally bring up the subject of martial arts, Eric's reveals that he's only had a few weeks of formal instruction in preparation of the film, studying with the noted trainer and fight choreographer, David Lea. He says that Lea's approach is to teach basic moves in the style of fighting required by the script, and then teach the students to be creative with them, and Eric has proven to be a quick study. Two days later a stunt man is unable to complete a Hong Kong style flying rig move; Eric comes up with an alternative solution for the action (disarming two attackers, then using their weapons on a room full of others.) saving the production hours of costly delays.
Toward the end of the seven week shoot (february through march) I speak on set with David Lea about Eric's training. The fight specialist says that Eric's successful ad libbing of certain action bits doesn't surprise him. Having trained dozens of actors for various action roles, Lea is states that Eric is one of the four who really "got it", being able to sell their on scene moves convincingly. [ The others being Sylvestor Stallone (for Tango and Cash), Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns), and Ashley Judd (KIss the Girls--watch for Lea as Judd's kickboxing instructor).] Lea, who also doubled for Michael Keaton in the Batman films and did the stunt choreography for The Rock and ConAir, will play a bouncer who spars off against the Crow.
In a change of pace for the Crow series, the current production is shooting much like an independent film, moving fast, using or adapting practical locations, and featuring top talent for every role, both in front and behind the camera. This new Crow is the youngest to date (sent to the electric chair on his 21st birthday, framed for the murder of his girlfriend), and this theme runs throughout much of the production, with most of the key players being annoyingly young (at least from my perspective).
The film's director, Bharat Nalluri, is making his american debut with The Crow: Salvation. Born in India and raised in London, Nalluri started down the road to film when he and a classmate Paul Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon) found an eight mm camera at their school. He went on to do television dramas, commercials and features, which brought him to the attention of Pressman films. The filmmaker tells me that he was at first intrigued, but skeptical about doing a Crow film, feeling that any new project should feature and really young protagonist. When it turned out that producers Edward Pressman and Jeff Most had a solid script in hand with ust such a premise, it didn't take long for Nalluri to become involved.
A visit to the lair of production designer Maia Javan and art director Tom Meyer reveals more Crow comic influences. Several O'barr paintings stand out amidst the collage of Edward Hopper paintings, vintage death row and medical photos that line the wall for inspirational reference. There are also Crow pieces by Alex Maleev, as well as new work by Jamie Tolagson from the Todd McFarlane Productions Crow series. Javan notes that the graveyard imagery by O'barr and Maleev is of particular interest to them. In the following weeks a beautifully rendered monument of a kneeling angel figure (modeled after actress Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) will be constructed for a sequence that, as filmed, is like an O'barr painting brought to life.
Bharat Nalluri is also a fan Tolagson's work for the new Crow series, praising the artist's take on "Crow-vision" and the energy of his compositions and line work. The innovating color design by Mark Nicholas also struck a chord with the filmmaker, who requested a set of color page proofs (because the work was still unpublished at the time). Indeed, everyone who sees the new comic agrees that it successfully utilizes color to convey the "film noir" power of the best black and white Crow comics, in much the same way that the first Crow film succeeded in reinventing classic black and white noir styles within a color context.
Later, co-star Fred Ward will tell me that in his view, The Crow was one of the few modern films to convincingly evoke a film noir sensibility. (Though Ward is well known to genre fans vie the Tremors films and HBO's Cast a Deadly Spell, Tarantino fans would do well to check out Miami Blues, a quirky crime picture that was far ahead of it's time and deserves to be rediscovered.) He say that he signed to the film because he liked the role and was impressed with the director (speaking of quirky crime films, check out Nalluri's Killing Time, a british production that has recently been released on tape domestically.)
Continuing the comic book connection, I chat will Alex Diaz of KNB who is on the set to handle the the special make up effects. A former comic book artist (doing work for west coast companies like Eclipse and Malibu), Diaz has successfully transitioned into special makeup, using his art skills to do storyboards and makeup designs for KNB, one of the leaders in the field. He shows me several pages of designs for the new Crow makeup, which is a telling departure from the previous films. Here the new "mask" is not applied by the Crow but instead is the eventual aftermath of his grisly date with the electric chair. The look is subtle but striking without being grotesque, and takes about an hour for Diaz to apply.
SOON: Hopefully more Salvation casting and a final word on Darkest Days

New Interviews Section
The A Boy and His Bird Interviews section has been updated and should be a lot easier to read! In the section comes the rarely seen interview with Brandon Lee, where he talks for eight pages on The Crow, this is the last time he ever spoke to the press, and is a lot different to the last televised interview! Also comes a new Salvation Interviews section, where you can read the latest from Kirsten Dunst, Bharat Nalluri and Ed Pressman on Salvation. Have a good look around and fill your mind with all things Crow.

Wizard Rundown of Salvation
THE CROW: SALVATION
Major Players: Eric Mabius, Kirsten Dunst, Bharat Nalluri (director); Dimension Films.
Status: Completed and awaiting release.
Release Date: Spring 2000.
Plot: Framed for the murder of a 16-year-old girl and sentenced to die on the night of his 18th birthday, Alex Corvis is resurrected as the latest Crow. He begins to seek those who set him up and judge them for their crimes while unraveling the reason for the girls murder.
The Scoop: With a budget of $25 million, the third "Crow" movie will have the feel of the first "Crow" more action and the return to a revenge-driven storyline, with less of a focus on the mythology of the Crow power. Corvis (Mabius) is killed in the electric chair and doesnt have to put on the traditional Crow face paint. Instead, the scars caused by electric shock have burned the Crow markings onto his face.

More Salvation News
Just to clear up any thoughts about The Crow: Salvation, here's what to know!
The script of the movie draws upon some of the scenes covered in the first movie i.e Alex Corvis' hands get cut, then he looks down at them while they heal.
Erin Randall is the sister of Lauren Randall, who is stabbed 53 times by the police.
The movie revolves around the corrupt police as well as the murder of Lauren Randall.

SOON: A few more Salvation Facts!
14th July 1999
Salvation: The Facts
Ok, there are a lot of rumours floating around the Internet surrounding The Crow: Salvation, and if the ABaHB review of the script was read, you'd know the truth (shame on you if you haven't!). Here are the facts regarding the movie, and if anything, the interview with the director told us that the film will finish editing in November!
Alex Corvis (The new Crow) will have the makeup burnt into his face from a faulty execution. His helmet melts to his face.
The soundtrack hasn't been decided on yet, though a more 'classical' feel is wanted. Kirsten Dunst has said she would like Korn on the soundtrack.
Erin Randall (Kirsten Dunst) doesn't turn into a female Crow, though she does put on Crow makeup (if the scene has made it into the final cut).
Alex Corvis doesn't wear any type of 'Crow outfit', rather he wears the prison clothes he was executed in.
The bad guys in the film are all police.
The film is still in the editing stage, after having being shot from February to April. Editing should finish in November.
Ed Pressman has already seen a rough cut and is very pleased with what he sees (no controversy surrounding the screening a la City of Angels).
Expect some more announcements on Salvation soon!

The Crow: Darkest Days
There is reportedly yet another (minor) film being released by a batch of die hard "Crow" fans in Oregon. A film titled, "The Crow: Darkest Days" will feature the tale of Gabriel Animus. A man who is killed alongside his younger brother in a sacrafice/execution by a band of men who call themselves the "Kindred" and worship the fallen one...the Devil. Satanic rituals and sacrafices continue, until the Crow intervines. Gabriel returns to avenge he and his brothers deaths, and to protect his lost love, Victoria Natas who witnessed their execution but escaped the executioners and her own death. Not too much more information has been released, but stay tuned for more information and pictures!

The Crow #6 Review
Crow #6 - In the skin of an angel part 2
Part 2 of the "angel" story arc finds Eric being baited by Sin to come over to her lair. Her bait is Eric's old school friend, Jack. When Eric comes to the aid of his friend, he and Sin have their showdown. Walker is in the background however, surveying the goings on. This is the last volume with Kent Williams' cover art. I can't help but feel this story needed 3 volumes instead of 2. The storyboard art continues to be very good, and Jon Muth scribes more interesting dialogue between Eric and the Crow. I just wish they had stretched this one a bit longer. This volume also contains an interview with "The Crow: Salvation" director, Bharat Nalluri by Jeff Conner. Nalluri gives some good insight to where the film stands today. There are also a few new pictures from the movie, one, an interesting photo of the latest avatar walking away from some of his handy work. They continue to be very coy with not letting any close up pictures of Alex Corvis as The Crow leak out however.

DUNST TALKS CROW
The soundtrack artists for the upcoming The Crow: Salvation feature film haven't been announced yet, but one of the movie's stars has a recommendation or two.
"I think this movie should have Korn in it," said Kirsten Dunst, who plays Erin Randall, the sister of the murdered girlfriend of the new Crow, played by Eric Mabius. "And the Beastie Boys maybe. I don't know if they've had rap music in before (in Crow movies), but I just think all their CDs are great.
"But definitely Korn - I see that the most. They're the major ones for me that I want to see in the movie."
Dunst, who recently turned 17, is part of the demographic targeted when The Crow: Salvation reaches theaters next spring. The new Crow is far younger than his movie predecessors, a deliberate attempt to bring in the crowds that have been so prevalent in recent box-office successes.
And Dunst said she's playing a strong female character which the young moviegoers will like.
"Usually girls in films, especially these kinds of films where there's a lot of action, they don't do as much," Dunst said. "Erin kicks butt in the film. She doesn't stand back and just watch. I liked that about her character a lot.
"I get to shoot a gun. She's not like a girl who will sit there and let bad stuff happen to her. She tries get out of whatever she can. I stab people; I don't sit back and watch - which I likied."
Six weeks of principal photography of The Crow Salvation, a $17 million production, ended in late March in Salt Lake City, Utah. A lot of the film, directed by Bharat Nalluri, was shot in the wee hours for the film's night scenes.
"They were really good about it, though, because I got off every night at like 12:30, so it wasn't bad at all for me," Dunst said. "It wasn't that hard of a shoot for me. The role was demanding, but the hours weren't."
And what did Dunst think about co-star Mabius?
"I think Eric and I had a really amazing chemistry on screen," Dunst said. "Every time I worked with him, it was so intense. His eyes are amazing to look at. With that Crow make-up on, you have to express so much with your eyes and everything - and I think he's very intense.
"He comes across as one of the best Crows, I definitely think so. He's got a very good air about him, that kind of mystique of a mystery man. His eyes are very powerful. A very good actor."
While post-production of The Crow: Salvation - third in the series based on the comic-book characters and concepts created by James O'Barr -- continues until year's end, fans of Dunst can see her in two comedies this summer, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Dick.
"I do get into heavy-duty stuff, but then I do comedies," Dunst said of her roles. "I have two comedies coming out, but then I did The Devil's Arithmetic (a Showtime movie) and then the Virgin Suicides, which is also a darker film.
"I like mixing everything. I want to make sure I just don't do one type of film. I have an interest in everything and I think you grow as an actor by doing more different kind of roles."
Dunst can also currently be seen on HBO in Small Soldiers.
The Crow: Salvation also stars Fred Ward, Grant Shaud and Jodi Lynn O'Keefe. Look for more on The Crow: Salvation soon here in The Continuum.

Here's what Bryce Zabel has to say about Stairway to Heaven:
It sounds true to me. The offices are closed down and the sets are gone and the actors have been released. It's a damn shame...

ABaHB Remembers Kitchen Sink
Here's some news for the fans who might have missed the demise of Kitchen Sink in December:
The "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" Award
The demise of Kitchen Sink Press
If the comics world seems a little less complete, there's a reason: Kitchen Sink Press, a company with a quater century history of cutting-edge and historically-relevant comics, is no longer. Denis Kitchen, a publisher who made new generations of fans aware of his genius of Will Eisner, saw his namesake publishing company go down the drain in December, just before they could release their first new licensed Crow comic. Kitchen Sink helped to fill the gaps between eclectic comics, underground comics, historic reprints, and modern-day comics, offering something that appealed to fans of every genre... but obviously it wasn't enough to keep a company going in this tough time. From Hell, The Spirit, Zot!, Li'l Abner, Steven... let's hope these projects and many other find new homes in the near future.
