February 27th, 2002 Pressman Comments On Marketing Films After The Star Has Passed Away In response to the recent theatrical release of QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, which stars the late Aaliyah, Ed Pressman had these comments on promoting a film when the star has died suddenly before its release: In marketing a dead performer, studios must avoid appearing like bloodsuckers themselves. "Clearly the worst thing is to seem to be exploiting the situation," says producer Ed Pressman, who faced a similar dilemma on 1994's THE CROW after 28-year-old star Brandon Lee was accidentally killed late in the shoot. "The basic argument is you should bury the film along with the person - it's somehow sacrilegious to exploit a film with someone who's not alive," says Pressman. "There's a cynical attitude that people have...no matter how much you try to do the right thing." (THE CROW, completed without Lee but promoted with his image, grossed some $50 million domestically.) This article in full can be found in the February 22nd, special collector's double issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. The article can be found on page 9. Take care.....come what may.

David and Matt recently returned from New York, where their documentary "Inertia: Re-Making The Crow" was featured. The turn out was as David expected. Not a huge crowd, given it had no major promotion, but a respectable showing. There were some sound difficulties during the film, but other than that, the film was well received by the audience. This is more than likely the final chapter in David and Matt's collaboration. Reflecting on the culmination of their efforts, David said " I got to see New York because of a movie that I started when I was fourteen! That's certainly nothing we could have ever dreamed of while toiling away in our basements nearly ten years ago!" Indeed, the road traveled by them was a long one. Who would have figured that ultimately, their work would be featured in a festival, in all places, New York! We take our hats off to David and Matt and thank them for sharing the experience with the fans. To conclude our look at David and Matt's project, we have a review of their "Inertia" documentary. Along with that are some photos that were taken during the New York Trip. One is a picture of the promotion poster. The other photo is of David and Matt posing outside the festival. We are not done yet however. Surely there are questions that you have for David in regard to his film. If you have a question for David, send me an email at LLcruize@yahoo.com. In the subject put "Ullman Question". What I will do is gather all of the questions and put them in a word document and send them all to David. He will then answer them and forward the document back to me and we will post it here at ABaHB. We will accept question through the month of February. So get your questions together and sent them to me by the 28th of this month. Take care.....come what may. Darkhorizons ran an update on Monday, February 18th on Proyas' next project: "The Crow" Director Alex Proyas updated Moviehole on the status of a flick formerly known as "Hardwired" - "The project is actually called "I Robot" and is based on the stories of Isaac Asimov. It's a murder mystery where the main suspect is an extremely advanced robot. Proyas commented that "It will probably be my next movie and we are hoping to start shooting before the end of this year". Sources told The Continuum that negotiations are in final phases and the announcement could happen at this weekend's MegaCon in Orlando, Fla. Chaos! Publisher Brian Pulido could not be reached over the weekend. Crow comics were last published on a regular basis by Todd McFarlane Productions through Image Comics. Hello everyone. The latest Spectrum of Crow Consciousness is ready for your reading and discussing. We have tackeled the subject of whether or not THE CROW should focus on being an "action" movie genre. For those new, the Spectrum is a joint effort between ABaHB and the ChambeRoom where tWISTEd sPINe and LLcruize both write an article on the same subject, giving them our own unique views. We then invite everyone to the ChambeRoom to discuss the articles in more depth. It is an effort to get the fan base thinking more outside the box, to generate enthusiasm for THE CROW. So give the latest offering a look and then go discuss it with us!
As we all know, Mark's latest movie “Brotherhood Of The Wolf” has received wide range critical and fan raves. It is now available U.S. wide, so look for it in your town. Mark is in talks to play a bad guy, opposite DMX and Jet Li in the action thriller “Cradle To The Grave”. The film is set to start filming this month. If he signs on, this will be one to definitely look out for! Thanks to Dark Horizons for the tip on “Cradle To The Grave”. *Update* Per Mark's official site, www.markdacascos.com, he is going to be in an upcoming episode of CBS' new hit series CSI. A young couple in love ( Mark and Mary Reidan) is killed when one of them decides to leave their involvement with a local gang behind for the newfound love of their fiancé, and their unborn child. This is the premise of a new fan made Crow film titled “The Crow: First Born”. The filmmakers name is Chris Rayback. This is the first film he has ever completed. As is the case with many fans, Chris loves the Crow stories and really loves the filmmaking process. Learning new things about the filmmaking process has become one of his new hobbies. When he and his outstanding crew (also crow fans) got together and discussed making a short film based on a crow idea, Chris was very excited to begin working on it. They hope fans are pleased with the end result. This film is in no way associated with any of the Edward R Pressman and Jeff Most Production, or an original James O'barr comic idea. This is simply a fan film inspired by their ideas. Hopefully this will open the doors to even better fan films. You can contact Chris through email (click on his name). Go check out “The Crow: First Born” and see what you think. It is approximately 13 minutes long. Chris recommends viewing this film in 200k with the QuickTime Player. The ifilms 56k player really doesn't do the film justice. Take care…..come what may.
