Crow Salavtion Update

Pressman Film has released new images from The Crow: Salvation, the third installment in the live-action movie series based on James O'Barr's comic-book characters and concepts.

The new images feature some of the $17 million film's action sequences, many of which were shot in late March at Steele Properties in Salt Lake City. Those scenes included police cars and a helicopter.

And while director Bharat Nalluri said a love story is at the core of the movie, he also enjoys the action.

"It's really fantastic when you turn your cameras over and helicopters are flying overhead, buildings are exploding and people are diving out of windows," Nalluri said. "It's like the world's biggest train set."

The Crow: Salvation is being targeted for a March 2000 release from Miramax/Dimension.

"Spring 2000 - that sounds amazing, doesn't it?" Nalluri said. "Spring 2000 - if all the projectors are still working because of Y2K! Maybe they'll blow up or something."

The film stars Eric Mabius, Kirsten Dunst and Fred Ward.

Written by: Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes
Directed by: Brenton Spencer

Log Line: A kidnapped baby spurs Talon to get involved - exposing her to the police - which forces Draven to step in. Meanwhile a jittery Capshaw is back on the job, and Albrecht is asked to keep an eye on her.
Aimless and guilt-stricken, Hannah/Talon (Bobbie Phillips) has been wandering the streets of Port Columbia when her spirit crow leads her to a distraught mother, Nancy Meyers (Stellina Rusich), whose infant daughter has just been kidnapped. Hannah decides to intervene but her brutal methods for extracting information from anyone who may have been involved awakens interest in the police. Draven, unaware of the havoc Hannah is causing, and the trouble she is in, has gone to a special glade in the woods where he and Shelly spent time. Shelly appears and, not sure if it's real or not, Draven loses himself in the wonder of being together again. Capshaw is finally back on the job, but her nerve is gone. She was instrumental in getting Albrecht demoted but in an ironic twist, Vincennes asks him to keep an eye on her. He has his hands full though with two Crows on the loose. He plays back-up as Draven and Hannah rescue the child but Hannah takes off with the baby as a replacement for her dead child and it is up to Draven to try and put things right.

The Crow: Stairway To Heaven Interview

The heading pretty much speaks for itself!

Feldman returns to acting with Crow guest shot
By Rob Allstetter/The Detroit News

"People know Corey and people like Corey," Corey Feldman says. "They just don't know from where or why."

Yep, Corey Feldman's been away that long.

Most people remember the child actor and teen heartthrob -- he still gets autograph requests from youngsters who have seen the 1980s kidflick, The Goonies -- but it's been a while since his well-documented difficulties and last movie appearance, and he's slipped from public view enough that the term "return" now applies to his acting career.

After spending the past two years working with his band The Truth Movement, Feldman marks his return to acting with a guest appearance in the television series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven.

In the Crow episode "Brother's Keeper," which airs in syndication the week of May 3 (In Detroit on Ch. 20 on Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m.), Feldman plays Chris, the younger step-brother of Eric Draven, The Crow. Chris gets involved with a mobster and his stolen million dollars of cash and inevitably needs help from his super-powered brother.

"It was a lot of fun. It was pretty cool," Feldman says in a telephone interview. "I was a big fan of the Crow movie; I thought it was really well done. The executive producer of the television series, Bryce Zabel, contacted me and said, 'We're interesting in you being on the show, we like your work.'

"He gave me a video tape (of the show), and I was impressed with it. The style was cool and it was shot well. I'm not really a huge TV guy, but I thought it was cool, so why not?"

Feldman says he identifies with the after-life and redemption aspects of The Crow mythology, which features a character brought back from the dead to right wrongs while trying to reunite on the other side with his love.

"I'm a spiritualist," Feldman says. "The only thing that keeps me going is that we don't know where we'll end up, that there's more to us than this lifestyle. I have to believe there is a bigger picture and that this is a testing ground."

Feldman will also be on the big screen again this summer in Fortune Hunters, which he describes as a "modern-day Cannonball Run." The film, which also stars Richard Thomas and Maureen McCormick, is about the pursuit of a winning lottery ticket.

Whatever his acting future might hold, Feldman says music will be part of his career. He describes the sound of his 10-piece band as "60s-70s rock, mixed with contemporary dance grooves" and says it's been favorably compared to Pink Floyd.

"It's gotten really, really good reviews," Feldman says of the CD, titled Still Searching for Soul. "Being an actor, people don't believe you can be a musician. But music is part of my heart and soul."

The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, based on the comic-book characters created by Metro Detroit James O'Barr, has been renewed for a second season, and Feldman says he could return next year - and he might even bring the band along, too.

"Oh, definitely," he says. "It's definitely an open-ended kind of situation."

Crow: Stairway To Heaven Episode Rundown

Episode for 4/19: CLOSING TIME

Written by: Brad Markowitz & Edward Tivnan
Directed by: William Gereghty

Log Line: A shady promoter persuades Draven to pick up his guitar again, but Soleil Hazard has a sinister purpose and the music Draven creates is pure evil.
Draven visits Funboy (Ty Olsson) in prison and, using his powers, forces him to relive the night he helped kill Draven and Shelly. Funboy is genuinely overcome by guilt and remorse. Before he can make amends, however, he is visited by the menacing Soleil Hazard (Gabriel Casseus), who seems to have a telepathic connection to the evil spirit of Top Dollar. Posing as a music promoter for Fadeout Records, Hazard approaches Draven at the Blackout Club and suggests he rejoin his old band. Draven refuses but is disturbed by the encounter, and by the incredible music that starts to fill his every thought. Meanwhile, Albrecht gets his Detective badge back along with his first assignment - to find Funboy -- who has broken out of prison. Albrecht warns Darla (Lynda Boyd), but she can't escape her former boyfriend, or the alcohol he forces her to drink. Draven, lost to the increasingly powerful sounds playing in his head, is oblivious to everything, including Sarah and Albrecht. Reunited with Hangman's Joke for a playoff competition against Econoline Crush (as themselves), Draven, turned into the Crow by the force of the music, spots Funboy in the audience with a knife at Darla's throat. Murderous and vengeful, the Crow takes off in pursuit, unaware that they are all being manipulated by Top Dollar's evil tune. Only Shelly can save them.

For Those Who Came In Late... Wrap Up of Past News

It's been quite a time for ABaHB and Crow News over the past weeks. The Crow Action Figure has been talked about, though the pics have been floating around for some time. The pictures for The Crow: Salvation have finally emerged, and they relate quite strongly to the script review, this only proves that the script is 100% real. James O'Barr is back to doing what he does best - write good stories in the new short anthology series titled James O'Barr's Tasty Bits. The Salvation release date has been lengthened to next year, though this should be subject to change (one year to edit a film is quite a bit). The Image Crow Comic has taken off to be a big success, with sellout sales world wide, the mood of the comic is perfect for The Crow with dark colours and rich writing. The story is a combination of James O'Barr's masterpiece and the movie. ABaHB has gone under some big changes, most have yet to take effect, but check it out here. Well, that's about all in the world of The Crow as of late! Remember to check back for around the clock Crow news!

STH Episode Rundown

Episode for 4/12: LAZARUS RISING

Written by: Jonathan Vankin & John Whalen
Directed by: Scott Summersgill

Log Line: A shadowy group of powerful men approach Draven with an offer he can't refuse - to reunite him with Shelly forever.
Dr. Dorsett (Don Most) seeks Draven out, carrying an unusual offer from the Lazarus Group. It was this secretive consortium of powerful men who smoothed the way for Dorsett's therapy license to be re-instated and he owes them a favor. They claim to posses advanced technology which will reunite Draven with Shelly and want to test it on Draven. Unbeknownst to him, the Lazarus Group is a secret society rumored to have been in existence since the time of the Druids, and their interest in him is anything but benevolent. The society is dominated by the physically frail but still intimidating Frederick Balsam (Mavor Moore) who holds sway not only over Judge Morrison (Jerry Wasserman), who unexpectedly released Draven from jail, but also over head scientist Dr. Jack Saks (Robert Wisden), and group member Steve Fentress (Terry David Mulligan). Draven agrees to the experiment, but once hooked up to the machinery finds himself split. The Crow is the one strapped to the operating table, Draven is stuck in a psychological limbo with someone who looks like, but isn't Shelly. When Dorsett realizes that Draven is being used to be the new body for Balsam's soul, he tries desperately to put matters right. Meanwhile Albrecht, who is still estranged from Draven, has his own crisis of conscience when he is approached by a slick lawyer who wants to pursue a lawsuit of wrongful dismissal based on race.

The Crow: Salvation Mention

Here is a repeat of the Salvation story in Comics 2 Film:

The Crow: Keeping It Real

The Crow is ™ and © James O'Barr
Photo is © Pressman Films
British director Bharat Nalluri, who recently wrapped principal photography on The Crow: Salvation spoke to the Detroit News Comic Book Continuum about that movie.  With a budget of $17million, Nalluri favors "in camera" special effects.  "I'm not a huge fan of blue screens, I have to say, unless you've got $120 million to spend on it," he told the Continuum. "I think audiences are very clever, much cleverer than people give them credit for. When you do it in camera, like they used to do it, smoke and mirrors, that's when an audience senses it's real.

"I really think they know when things are real and when it's not. I don't know what it is, but I think the human eye and brain are far cleverer. When they know it's real, it's much more of an impact, I think, than when they know there's some kind of computer trick."

The Crow: Salvation is now in post-production, which is expected to last through the end of the year.  The movie has a targeted release date of March 2000.

Final Mention of Crow Figure
For the benefit of the people on the ABaHB mailing list, and those who didn't read yesterday's news, the action figure is part of Todd McFarlane's Movie Maniacs II action figures series. It comes along with Michael Myers, the Scream action figure and others. It has a suggested retail price of $7.99. The figure is coming out around Halloween '99 and was on parade at the '99 Toy Fair. The figure is based on Brandon Lee in The Crow. To see pics of the figure and more info on the figure than you could possibly ever want, read yesterday's News!

The Crow Figure

Our newer viewers have been asking of the Todd McFarlane Brandon Lee action figure. There was a post in the February news with quite a bit of information about the toy, but here is a run down from Spawn.com

Gothic Cult Hero Eric Draven from The Crow movie is the newest action figure from McFarlane Toys'

McFarlane Toys, in conjunction with Ed Pressman Films, is proud to present the newest member of McFarlane Toys' Movie Maniacs II line - Eric Draven, an action figure from the major motion picture The Crow.

Created by James O'Barr, The Crow has made the transition from a cult comic book to an innovative influence in the entertainment industry. With two major motion pictures, a syndicated television show currently airing - "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven," and a flood of licensed merchandise, The Crow has drawn a large non-comic book reading base into its gothic world.

Based on the original motion picture, McFarlane Toys' Eric Draven is a vengeful, grief-driven hero endowed with supernatural strength and vision, and guided by a hypnotic black crow-the spirit guide between the world of the living and the realm of the dead.

Standing 7" tall, Eric comes with a guitar and strap, and a crow as accessories. The main figure will have articulation points at the neck, shoulders, hips and wrists. The bird stands approximately 1 1/4" tall, and has a wingspan of 4 1/8."

These figures will follow in the award-winning McFarlane Toys tradition of highly detailed sculpting that captures the likeness of Brandon Lee's character from the movie. Suggested retail price for the packaged figure is estimated to be $7.99.

-more-

Also from Todd McFarlane Productions and Image Comics comes The Crow, a new comic book series, written by Jon J Muth, scheduled to begin publication in February 1999. The series will emerge as a full-color, monthly comic book based on the popular Eric Draven character.

Beau Smith, Todd McFarlane Productions' Executive Director of Publishing, explains, "Readers will get a chance to fully examine the events that turn Eric Draven into The Crow, and for the first time ever, explore what happens after he wreaks vengeance on those who wronged him."

This comic, the first Crow book to appear in color, will feature Jamie Tolagson as the artist for the first three issues, and Kent Williams as the cover artist for the first six issues. The first issue will ship with a 1 in 4 variant cover by Todd McFarlane.

The Crow will be distributed at comic shops and newsstands across North America, and also will be available in almost every country in English via Todd McFarlane Productions' worldwide distribution network, Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. Several foreign-language editions are expected to appear in more than 30 countries, pending the completion of foreign rights negotiations.

Todd McFarlane, an entertainment and business mogul, controls McFarlane Toys. McFarlane Toys is 5th largest action figure manufacturer in the United States, and the fastest growing toy company in 1995, producing Spawn and KISS action figures along with figures based on non-licensed characters and licensed characters including Species II, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th.

McFarlane executive produced the $100 million grossing Spawn live-action movie, New Line Cinema's 4th largest opening ever, and #1 release in 1997. He also executive produces the Emmy award-winning Todd McFarlane's "Spawn" animated series. Originally released in 1997, the animated series is HBO Home Video's top selling original programming video of all time, and is certified platinum by ITA.

Todd McFarlane owns, writes, draws, and publishes Spawn, which is the #1 selling comic book in the US and has been since its debut in May 1992 and continuing today at issue #79. Created in 1992, Spawn has sold over 120 million copies worldwide in over 120 countries in 15 different languages. Spawn issue #1 sold an unprecedented 1.7 million copies in the US. Spawn consistently outsells Batman, Superman and Spiderman. Other titles created and produced by Todd McFarlane Productions include Curse of the Spawn, KISS Psycho Circus comic book -- the #1 release in 1997, and Todd McFarlane Presents KISS Psycho Circus Magazine.

The McFarlane group of companies includes McFarlane Toys, McFarlane Design Group, Todd McFarlane Productions, and Todd McFarlane Entertainment. For more information, visit us online at www.spawn.com .

Repeat of the Salvation Release Date
A mention of Salvation's release date in Cinescape:

New ‘Crow’ Release Date
It sounds like the next Crow movie, The Crow: Salvation

THE CROW: SALVATION UPDATE
The Crow: Salvation, which recently wrapped principal photography in
Salt Lake City, will likely be in post-production through the end of the year,
British director Bharat Nalluri told The Continuum.

"I've never done post-production in America," Nalluri said. "I think it's a
slightly different system. You test a lot here. Whereas in England, it's, 'Right.
We're out of money in six weeks. Let's finish the movie.'

"Here, they spend a lot of time refining the movies to make sure the people it's made for really care about it."

The budget for The Crow: Salvation is in the neighborhood of $17 million, and Nalluri said most of the film will be done "in camera."

"I'm not a huge fan of blue screens, I have to say, unless you've got $120 million to spend on it," he said.

Nalluri noted he is using some blue-screen work, including scenes following the flight of a Crow.

The Crow: Salvation is targeted for a March 2000 release. Look for more on the film in future
Continuum reports.

Thanks to: Comic Book Continuum and Richard Wilson!

Salvation Producers with 'Dogma'
Not really Crow news, but the producers of The Crow: Salvation,  Bob & Harvey Weinstein, are producing the new Kevin Smith (Mallrats, Chasing Amy) movie 'Dogma' internationally.

But her brutal methods for getting information attract attention from the police.

Irony Despair Takes a Break

When I get back, there will be some big things in the works for ABaHB, so continue to come back daily for Crow News! If you have any comments, suggestions, questions, or anything, mail to me here. If you have any feedback to the site click here. If you want to join the ABaHB mailing list, go to the bottom of the page. Crow Creator Has Cryptic Goodies

It seems J.O'Barr is back in action! It seems that reports of him doing a Batman comic have been exaggerated, but it's never too late:

It seems that fans of The Crow are in for more of a delusional creator's madness! ACG has signed an agreement with Crow creator James O'Barr to publish a collection of off-beat art and stories from the artist's own archives. The series will include rare and new stories, as well as spot drawing and art that covers the length of O'Barr's comic career. The first book, James O'Barr's Tasty Bits, is scheduled to be released in May.

The Crow: Stairway To Heaven Episode Rundown

Episode for week 3/29: GET A LIFE

Written by: Bryce Zabel & Brad Markowitz
Directed by: TW Peacocke

Log Line: Shelly draws Draven into solving the murder of a young woman whose fiance is framed for the killing.

In the Land of the Dead, Shelly meets a young woman, Elise Franklin (Ingrid Kavelaars), whose fiance has been framed for her murder. Draven, meanwhile is about to be evicted from the loft he and Shelly shared when she communicates the injustice to him. The loft is obviously a link-point between their two worlds and must be saved at all costs. Detective Albrecht, who has formed an uneasy alliance with Draven, advises him to "get a life and pay the rent", so when India Reyes (Julie Dreyfus) offers him a job at the Blackout Club, he agrees. Draven sets out to find justice for Gil Hedges (Peter Fleming) and expose the real murderer - the dead woman's father, John T. Franklin (Donnelly Rhodes). After Draven establishes Hedges' innocence, Elise is freed to move on to the Light and asks Shelly to join her. Shelly, however, isn't ready to leave - she is waiting for Draven.
